When 20-year-old Lady Rozelle Pierrepont was demobilized from the WRNS in 1945, she was heartbroken.

Naturally she was glad that the war was over, but leaving the WRNS meant an end to the boat-handling which she had learned to love. The prospect of life as a debutante and inheriting a grand estate was no comfort at all. Her first attempt to gain employment as a yacht-hand proved disastrous and the elderly motorboat her parents allowed her to buy, leaked, broke down and was eventually wrecked.

Undaunted, Rozelle fell in love with the 25’ Folkboat Martha McGilda in which she sailed single-handed to the Åland Islands. This is the funny, plucky, heartwarming story of a determined solo sailor who finally found happiness both at sea and on shore.
