Finding Pax

Kaci Cronkhite

Adlard Coles Nautical

£12.99

A wooden boat’s history is written in her wood. When Kaci Cronkhite bought the Danish spitsgatter (double-ender) Pax from a craftsman in British Columbia there was much to admire and much to do. As soon as she arrived in her new home, Port Townsend, Washington, essential repairs began. The material challenge led to an archival search as Cronkhite sought to establish her yacht’s provenance and original appearance. This led her via California to Kalundborg, Denmark where Pax had been built in 1936. It’s an impressive account of determination and meticulous research together with astounding co-operation from fellow spitsgatter enthusiasts and relatives of previous owners. The history of this wooden boat contained the history of other people’s dreams.
