Rick Ballard’s wife Tania lives with Meniere’s Disease an inner ear disorder that takes sea-sickness to a new, potentially dangerous, level. Yet he longs for the life afloat. Admirably they achieve a compromise. Two years of planning enables two years of intermittent but pleasurable cruising. Rick and friends take Dutch Lady via Spain, Portugal, Lanzarote, Cape Verde to Antigua. From there is island-hopping is enabled and friends can join for blue water holidays which Tania can also enjoy. Careful timetabling is crucial and Ballard describes his book as ‘a tale of compromise and travel logistics’. He’s impressively well-organised (perhaps sometimes including a little too much detail) and there will be many couples who will admire both partners’ commitment and wish them well.
