Dr Kim Klaka is a naval architect and Director of the Centre for Marine Science and Technology in Western Australia. He’s also a sailor. Here he discusses issues of stability, hull resistance, foils, keels and rudders, sea-keeping qualities and design evaluation (polar plots) in terms that a non-academic can understand (well, mostly). While this will be of greatest use to owners and potential owners of yachts-with-manuals there is something here for everyone, even if it’s only the scientific explanation why it’s more effective to apply anti-fouling with a roller than a brush and where best to cower when seasick. His section on rudder failure makes worrying reading and should certainly provoke questions. His useful bibliography should help towards answers.
