Michelle Segrest and Maik Ulmschneider were used to day-sailing the Intercoastal Waterway with their two beagle puppies. Moving to live full time on the 43’ steel ketch Seefalke and sail from Northern Germany to Southern Alabama took considerably more thought. They take the approach that the principles of safety at sea with pets are the same as without pets. Dogs, like young children, also need a safe space, exercise, mental activity. It’s the paper work that’s complicated.  Every country has its own requirements and the authors include a comprehensive list.  This conscientious and appealing little book offers many practical tips (eg a fake grass mat for potty training) and I recommend a trip to their website www.sailorsandseadogs.com
