This booklet is the companion to RYA SAILfoiling and WINDfoiling courses. It’s therefore not entirely accessible to someone who is ignorant of the basic terminology. What is ‘conventional 5.7m weather’, and what’s the difference between ‘waterstart and uphaul’? A glossary might have helped. Nevertheless the concepts of foiling are fascinating and comprehensible to anyone who’s watched the effect of wind on sails and considered the action of an airplane wing.  Developing an instant response to the increase in apparent wind as the craft lifts out of the water into a sudden moment of silence sounds exhilarating. Rigging and equipment choices are necessarily complex and I was left with great respect for the individual foiler’s technical knowhow.
