An almanac, as Lucinda Heikell points out, is a baggy construction – you pop in whatever you think you’re going to need in the forthcoming year. She and her husband Rod soon accumulated so much knowledge they needed to repack. Less time-sensitive data is in their Cruising Companion; detailed local information in their series of Pilot Guides while the Almanac supplies an up-to-date passage planning overview. Tides, other than in the Straits of Gibraltar, are not an issue but the complex regulations governing access to twenty-two often mutually hostile countries must be kept current – as must phone numbers, websites, email addresses, safety data, radio frequencies, weather services, routes, distances, major lights and harbour details.
