Ocean is a saltwater book focussing on eight different habitats. Each has its problems but also solutions – if we chose to adopt them. A vignette from Attenborough introduces each chapter, often recalling his early encounter with a specific location – the Arctic, the Great Barrier Reef, the mangroves of Costa Rica -- then Colin Butfield takes over to widen the analysis.

These brief anecdotes are reminiscent rather than repetitious and Attenborough’s technique of using his own long life to emphasise the challenge that faces us now, immediately, on behalf of our children and grandchildren, remains effective.

We know the problems.
