(Ben Lowings writes) Tim Queeney keeps some line to remember a knot tied in it by his late father: his narrative of rope links Ice to Space Age. Queeney, Ocean Navigator’s former editor, writes as a bluewater sailor and focuses on rope’s maritime applications. Especially interesting are the recommendations - from professional riggers - of the knots they find most practical in their work. The information about rope’s role in facilitating the construction of the world’s great buildings is more surprising. The book doesn’t have the earnestness which mars some US journalism.
Rope-handlers on yachts share skills with parachuting, climbing and caving: this book will tell you how, and why, as a sailor, you should care.
