There’s a special delight in being close to the water and exploring the narrow, shallow places which yachts, and even sailing dinghies, cannot reach. There are plenty of such opportunities among the 50 suggestions for kayaks, canoes and SUPs included here. I was immediately attracted by the shallow, winding creeks of the North Norfolk coast, the Nene and the Great Ouse, running through inland counties. Cities, like Canterbury, look different from the water and so many castles can be viewed this way, Bodiam Castle on the River Rother, for instance. There are also suggestions for sea paddling, loch paddling and more challenging whitewater routes across England, Wales and Scotland.

Every section includes contact details for equipment hire and local operators.
