Understanding Boat Plumbing
and Water Systems

John Payne

This title, from the Sheriden House Guides series, originates in the US but is also applicable to UK and European systems. It covers fresh- and salt-water systems, hot water systems, galley plumbing, water makers, bilge pumps, ‘grey’ and ‘black’ water systems.  Some level of plumbing and electrical literacy is already assumed – occasionally I found terms with which I wasn’t familiar and wished there was a glossary.

Generally, the book succeeds in its aim of encouraging overall understanding of essential boat systems and therefore good maintenance habits. Payne stresses the importance of choosing quality over price in even mundane fittings, such as hose clamps. The trouble-shooting sections are likely to be helpful. A worthwhile purchase.
