‘Beware, dear reader, the sea has an enchantment that may captivate you and make you a bit of a misfit on land.’ Richard Crockatt uses this quote from John Guzzwell to introduce some of the postwar generation of small boat sailors who left Britain between 1945 and the mid-1960s.
To my generation these are well known names; Adlard Coles, Edward Allcard, Anne Davison, the Hiscocks, the Smeetons. Their achievements and their writing helped open up the world to others and they deserve to be remembered for their individuality, self-sufficiency, hardihood and expertise.
They were a co-operative, rather than competitive. These are qualities equally relevant today to all who go sailing for adventure and self-discovery, not to win prizes.
