After the Whistling Wind

This is one of the most individual cruising books I’ve read.  It tells the story of 25 years of sailing, foraging, exploring the west coast of Scotland. John Huckett was living off-grid in a camper van when he acquired a clinker dinghy and began exploring Loch Hourn. He experienced the beauty and joy of sailing as ‘the last freedom’. He and his partner Merry became liveaboards, finding their own food and alternating solitude in wild places with congenial company in boat yards and music festivals.

Age and the increasing prevalence of Scottish summer gales have finally forced John ashore, but his book will remain in my memory as a delightful and personal account – with some remarkable wild food recipes.
