Sailing to the Heart of Japan

Nicholas and Jenny Coghlan, Canadian diplomats, knew almost nothing about Japan when they set out from New Zealand for what would become a 15-month voyage finally completed in Alaska. The central interest lies in the year they spent exploring Japan, from entry at Kagoshima, through the turbulent Kanmon Kaikyo narrows to the Inland Sea. There, and throughout their journey, they discovered deserted islands, aging populations, and a society where gender segregation, duty and the work ethic made the cruising lifestyle almost unimaginable. They were met with extreme kindness and hospitality which enabled them to gain fascinating insights into this very different culture.

30 pages of detailed cruising notes would be invaluable to anyone intending to follow in their wake.
