Julian Mustoe’s idea to structure a cruise around the cities of the Hanseatic League may inspire others to do the same. He points out that the core of the mediaeval League was made up of 100 cities. By no means all were (or are) seaports but combinations are sufficiently accessible to provide plenty of historic interest within North Sea and Baltic cruising.

Mustoe’s adventure began in 2017 after the shocking loss of his small yacht Harrier in 2015. He explores Hanseatic sites in Scandinavia, Latvia, Germany, Holland and Belgium as well as transiting the Elbe-Trave canal. He was deterred from visiting Novgorod after the Salisbury poisonings (2018) and was also held up by the Covid pandemic.

This short book offers much to think about.
