This is subtitled ‘An Honest Log of Two Everyday People Sailing Around the UK’ -- immediately posing the question what’s an ‘everyday person’? Mark Evans comes across as thoughtful, meticulous, honest, capable of wonderful flashes of perception, liable to get tired, irritable and make mistakes, but above all determined to achieve his goal of sailing (not motoring) round Britain clockwise via Cape Wrath, using paper charts, hand-steering, few pre-booked destinations and no nights ashore. His boat is a 1980 28’ Twister. He’s not fanatic: he uses 2 tanks of diesel over 114 days, has an active radar reflector and GPS to check position. He acknowledges the different experience of his partner Katrina.
I thoroughly enjoyed his unpretentious, thought-provoking short book.
