The Price of Victory
N.A.M. Rodger
Allen Lane
£40.00
This is the final volume in N.A.M. Rodger’s Naval History of Britain. It begins in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna and ends two world wars later in 1945. It’s not a history of the Royal Navy but an exploration of the significance of naval warfare in British history. Rodger’s title highlights the fact that wars are expensive -- especially for the winners. He focuses on the contexts in which the navy operates, as well as the success or failure of its actions and the quality of its people.
His insights are unexpected and compelling and he writes so well he even makes admin interesting.
I can offer no higher compliment.
