David Rainsbury’s introduction draws attention to the geographical and cultural variety of the Irish Sea. Six countries, provinces or protectorates, each with its own form of government and different native languages or dialects surround an inland sea with complex tidal systems and what the author describes as ‘a range of challenges’. The book is structured anti-clockwise from Milford Haven as far as the North Channel and the Mull of Kintyre, then down the coast of Ireland to Kilmore Quay. Rainsbury obviously loves the area and his engagement with its shallows, rocks and tidal races is immediate.

If I were exploring the Irish Sea, I’d want his book with me.
