Uncommon Courage - paperback edition
The paperback edition of Uncommon Courage is published today 14.9.2023. It comes with especial thanks to the relatives of former RNVSR members who have made contact since the hardback publication in March 2022. They have offered encouragement, additional information - and photos. In our opinion these do so much to bring the book to life and we’re very grateful.
Perhaps most importantly a new appendix gives more detail of the work of the London Flotilla (closely linked with the Little Ship Club) and commemorates the 48 RNVSR London Flotilla members who lost their lives. This should be seen as a microcosm of the many organisations which worked to offer mutual support and training to the volunteers. They were replicated throughout the country but often forgotten now.
On a brighter note, appendix two of the new edition is able to tell the full story of the 38' motor yacht Naromis who set out gallantly for the Baltic in August 1939 -- thus triggering, for me (Julia Jones) a fascinating journey of research and discovery. It's thrilling to discover that one of her crew, Iris Clutton, who subsequently served in the Wrens, is still alive -- aged 101.
