Scapa Ferry by Antony Bridges 'Yachtsman Volunteers series number 6 £13.99
SUMMARY: This is a new edition of a book first published in 1957. It describes the volunteer war service of Antony and Margaret Bridges running an unconventional transport service across the Pentland Firth in the early years of WW2. Main cargo - dynamite! As well as being such an unusual war story, it's distinguished by Antony's outstanding descriptions of wind and wave and also by his wry humour.
Charles Coull writes: This is a stirring tale, a fascinating examination of a little-known corner of WW2 history and an exquisite illustration of the importance of logistics in warfare.
The Tuesday Boys by Rozelle Raynes 'Lionesses of the Sea' series number 5 £14.99SUMMARY: it's fifty years since Rozelle Raynes committed herself to teach sailing and seamanship to 8 young East London boys living in long term care. It's hard to imagine such a project now. So how did it work out for Rozelle, for the boys and the people around them? This new edition brings the story up to date.
Libby Purves says: "A book to raise the sails and raise the spirits. Marvellous”
From the Devil to the Deep Blue Sea by Clare Allcard. 'Lionesses of the Sea' series number 4 £13.99
SUMMARY: Clare Allcard wrote this book in the 1990s, soon after her two best-selling sailing books - but no one would publish it then. It's not an easy subject as it describes her breakdown, suicide attempts and treatment in 1960s mental hospitals before she met and married round-the-sailor Edward Allcard. Yet Clare is a strong and positive person, a survivor. It's a love story and a story of hope.
This is our most exciting new title. Jon Stock, author of The Sleep Room, writes "A raw and compelling insight into 1960s psychiatric care that left me reeling - and utterly in awe of the strength of the human spirit. A life-affirming book full of hope, courage and adventure."
