The fifth novel in Paul Weston’s Napoleonic series finds Percy Snowdon barely conscious and a captive of the French. Unsurprisingly It’s not long before he has made his escape and recovered sufficient strength to devise yet more ingenious strategies to harry the enemy. Command of the schooner Oleander has been taken over by former Lieutenant Kennedy who proves almost equally resourceful. Much of the action takes place in the Caribbean, focussing particularly on Guadeloupe, where Weston makes effective and sympathetic use of Maroon protagonists. Weston has detailed sailing knowledge of this area which adds an extra dimension of interest to the novel.

It’s not necessary to have read the whole series to enjoy this new instalment.
